Save Me From Myself -- Excerpt

Sebastian enters the room, and everyone straightens up. After calling the meeting to order, his eyes focus on me. “Ah yes, everyone,” he starts, “We have a new team member. This is Lyric and she’ll be covering all the local acts.” He motions towards me, and I smile shyly at everyone. I hate being put on the spot like this. “Tell everyone a little bit about yourself Lyric.” Great, so we’re back in high school.
I stammer, “Uh, well, hi. My name is Lyric, and I just moved to Nashville from Manhattan. I graduated in December from Columbia and I’m excited to be working with you all. I can’t wait to hear Nashville’s local talent!” Thankfully, after that lackluster description, Sebastian says nothing as I sit down. Ben must be silently laughing at me because his shoulders are shaking uncontrollably. I know it’s not because he’s crying for me!
I don’t have much time to dwell on Ben’s laughter or my own less than stellar introduction, because Sebastian quickly moves on to berating everyone for last week’s articles. Apparently, he’s convinced at least half of the staff lied about their journalism or english grades because “it was all crap.”
After spending almost fifteen minutes telling us how much we suck, Sebastian finally moves on to finish the meeting handing out everyone’s assignments. Because I’m new, I have nothing to write a review on this week, so he’s sending me out with Ben to “make some contacts” because there is a big concert this Friday. Ben’s got media passes for backstage at the Kings of Leon concert, and he’s doing an interview with the band. Sebastian asks me if I even know who they are, and I frown. Ben laughs, and tells him, “If she didn’t, I’m sure she’s read Fifty Shades, so she does now.” My face starts flaming, and I can’t say anything.
Sebastian snorts out a laugh, and begins giving everyone else their assignments. When he’s done, he calls the meeting to an end, and leaves us all sitting around the conference table. Once he’s out of hearing range, I turn to Ben and hiss, “Really? Did you have to put me and Christian Grey in the same sentence?”
Ben laughs harder, “Oh please, you know you read it. And if you haven’t, girl you better get on that! I’d leave Toby in a heartbeat for a night in the RROP” I am so not having this discussion with Ben, even if we do share a love of all things fifty.
I slap him, “Oh my God, Benjamin!”
He points a finger at me, “I knew it! You did read it! You dirty slut!” This whole exchange is surreal, but after that statement, I can’t do anything but laugh. I put my head in my hands and just let it out. Ben, however, thinks I’m crying, so he starts apologizing profusely. “Shit, L, I’m sorry! I was just teasing! You’re not a dirty slut at all!” At that, I can’t help but snort, and he knows I’m not upset.
“Bitch,” he mutters, “I was really worried!”
“Sorry Ben! It was funny though,” I tell him and bump his shoulder with mine before standing to walk out of the conference room.

Never Wanted More -- Excerpt

College sucks and math is the devil. My major is Commercial Music, not math, and there’s a reason for that. Math is not my best subject, but what class do they put me in? College Algebra. I barely passed High School Algebra; I’ll never make it in this class. I’ll have to find a tutor, there’s no other option.
On top of my math problems, I’ve got a new roommate. I don’t know what the hell happened; I had my dorm room to myself for the entire first semester. I got a notification yesterday from the housing department saying that as of today, I will have to share. Freshman year is just getting better and better.
Now I’m hurrying back to the dorms so that I can meet this new mystery roommate. The more I think about it, the more pissed off I get. I like having my own space, like being able to spread myself out. It doesn’t help that I’m not a people person. In fact, I pretty much try to avoid people whenever possible. That’s probably why I want to throw a tantrum when I reach my floor because there’s a slender, dark-haired girl cussing up a blue streak standing at my door. This must be her. She’s about my height, at least I think she is, it’s hard to tell because she’s weighed down by at least three duffel bags. She has one hanging from each shoulder, and then one draped across her body. Lovely. On top of having a new roommate, I have a new clothes-hound for a roommate. The dorms don’t have enough closet space for this.
Rolling my eyes heavenward, I walk over to introduce myself but when I reach her I chicken out..
Her back stiffens when she hears the snotty tone in my voice before she mumbles something I can’t understand.
Then, she snaps, “No, no problems at all. Just trying to get into my new room. Do you mind?”
Great. She has just as much attitude as I do. This is going to be one hell of a semester.
“I was going to offer to help considering that’s my room you’re trying to get into, but by all means, continue to curse at the door. I’m sure that will make it better.” I snark; leaning against the wall and crossing my arms over my chest.
The girl, whose name was on the letter from housing that I didn’t pay attention to, blows out an aggravated breath before turning to glare at me. It’s a good thing I have a thick skin or I’d be backing up.
After the death glare, she closes her eyes before muttering,“Wonderful. Way to make a first impression there Kat.”
I can’t help the smirk, if it wasn’t for the fact that I hate her for interrupting my nice, solitary dorm, I might actually like this girl. Unfortunately, before I can make any smart-ass comments about her talking to herself, a herd of what sounds like elephants stomp up the stairs to join us. Now, in edition to my bitchy roommate, there are four guys standing with us. All four are taller than my 5’8” and two of them are obviously related. The guys and my new roommate Kat all have dark hair, and I’m just waiting for the dumb blonde jokes to begin. One of the must-be-related guys puts his arm around Kat’s shoulders and pulls her in for a hug.
“Who’s this?” he asks her, looking over at me.
She sighs, “Apparently, my new not-so-friendly roommate. Max, this is…” trailing off when she realizes I haven’t told her my name.
Without moving forward or extending a hand, I speak up, “Peyton, her roommate Peyton.”
“Well, hey Peyton. I’m Maxwell, but you can call me Max.” Pointing at each guy in turn, he introduces the rest, “That’s my brother Clay and his roommates Emmett and Wyatt.”
So, I was right. Clay and Max are both tall with dark hair and eyes, although Clay is much more rugged-looking than his brother. Max is a little too fresh-faced for me. Based on the blush Kat’s had since he put his arm around her, he’s definitely her type. Interesting. The other two guys, Emmett and Wyatt are also tall, dark and handsome. Emmett has a much wilder look to him. His dark hair is messy, and he’s got more than a five-o’clock shadow going on. When I look at Wyatt though, I feel an immediate jolt. Where Emmett and Clay are rougher around the edges, Wyatt is polished sophistication. He’s got light bluish-green eyes and just enough scruff to be sexy instead of sloppy. He’s actually really attractive, and with everything else going on, I can’t afford to be attracted to someone. I need to focus on getting my degree before my parents decide to stop paying for school.

Everything I Shouldn't -- Excerpt
Leaning in close, making sure to keep eye contact with him, I growl, "You better bring her straight home after prom. I was your age not that long ago, and the last thing you're going to do is take SarahBeth to an unsupervised prom after party. She better come home in the same condition I'm sending her with you in. You get me?"
"Y-y-y-yes sir," Jordan stammers, clearly flustered. "I'll bring her right home, I promise."
I smile evilly, "Good. Thank you Jordan. I knew I could count on you."
Our conversation finishes just in time for SB to start down the stairs to meet us. As she reaches the bottom, I'm pretty sure Jordan and I have the same dumbstruck expression on our faces. In addition to the way her body looks in that pink dress, she’s curled her hair and put makeup on. She looks like an angel and my heart is beating double time in my chest. When SB sees Jordan, her entire face lights up, and my hands tighten into fists at my sides. Jealousy isn’t an emotion I’m familiar with, and it’s fucking with my head. The only thought going through my mind right now is that she shouldn't be looking at him that way, it should be me. I’m the only one she’s ever looked at that way. I feel like I’m losing my goddamn mind lately, all I can think about is this tiny slip of a girl who isn’t even eighteen.
Jesus Christ. I need to hold it together, but I have no idea how to do that. She is seventeen-fucking-years-old, and I’m twenty-eight. If it were anyone else having thoughts like this about her, I'd beat the ever-loving shit out of them, yet here I am thinking things that no man should think about someone her age. It’s making me crazy. I am only human, but the emotions I feel whenever I think about her, see her, smell her, make me the worst kind of bastard.

Short Blurb: I’ve loved SarahBeth in one form or another her entire life. The steps that brought us closer together weren’t easy for me to take. After letting her dictate our relationship, I’ve found myself practically homeless and estranged from my closest friends.
Now I’m left trying to move on, finding a new place to live and getting everything I need in order, while she’s trying to mend her broken heart. There’s just one problem…SarahBeth’s still keeping secrets – and her secret just might change everything.

Everything I Need -- Excerpt

Hope can be both wonderful and awful, but the death of hope is just plain painful. That day I began seriously doubting Jeremy’s love for me. I just couldn’t believe that after everything he was choosing not to see me, rejecting me once more. Jeremy had become my everything... even though he’s everything I shouldn’t have. He is the first and only man I’ve ever loved, my only lover, more my best friend than Livvie and yet he continues to turn me away. It makes me doubt every single thing we’ve ever been to each other.
Her eyes widen slightly in recognition, she remembers me. That will make the rejection even more humiliating if she tells me I’m still on Jeremy’s “don’t want to see” list. “Can I help you?” Her voice is so snotty. The condescending way she’s speaking to me makes me want to yank her obvious extensions out and claw her eyes out with my now non-existent nails.
I open my mouth to tell her I’m here to see him when the voice I’ve been dying to hear asks in disbelief, “SarahBeth?” Squeezing my eyes shut, I turn to face him. When I open them, Jeremy’s the only thing I see. I soak in the sight of him, dressed in a navy blue suit, wearing his square black glasses and looking like he’s not shaved in a couple days, I say nothing; finally being in his presence has rendered me speechless.
“What are you doing here?” He asks, his voice is stern, his eyes hard and cold and completely different from the Jeremy I know. He doesn’t make a move to touch me, but I can’t keep myself from moving closer to him. My heart breaks a little when he steps back, keeping the distance between us.
Giving him what I hope is a reassuring smile, I say, “I came to talk to you. I need to talk to you. I’m…” my voice breaks and my hand goes to my heart, an unconscious act of self- protection. “I’m so sorry for everything. For not...“
“Stop.” Jeremy holds up a hand, looking around us at the curious audience we are attracting. The tension between us is obvious, and everyone likes a real life soap opera.
Suddenly self-conscious, and fully aware that he’s not the person who likes his personal business out there for the world to see, I ask, “Can we talk for a minute? I’ll go anywhere you want.” I’m close to begging, terrified this isn’t going to end well. He doesn’t say a word, just nods as he gestures to the hallway where I know his office is.
As we walk past the reception desk, the girl behind it glares at me. It’s immature of me, but the nerves fluttering in my stomach and the insecurity I’m feeling comes out as snark. “Guess I don’t need your help after all.” Her glare deepens and I hear Jeremy sigh behind me.
“Behave yourself, SarahBeth.” Then, he says to her, “Hold my calls until I tell you otherwise, okay Tonya?” She nods, smiling widely up at him as he follows me back to his office in a way that makes me want to shank her. I hate feeling jealous over other women. It just reminds me where we were a few short weeks ago. He doesn’t speak, doesn’t touch me, just follows along behind me, the small distance between us feels insurmountable.
