Review -- Raze by Tillie Cole

RazeRaze by Tillie Cole

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Holy crap.. I finished this one in about 5 hours... My mind is still whirling

Review to come

Edited June 15, 2015

Ok... I had to wrap my head around this one.

I freaking LOVED it. I have had it on my ipad for a bit. Iam terrible about grabbing books when they are on sale even tho I have a gazillion I have not read yet. And I finally got to this one.

I love Tillie Coles Sweet Series. Even tho it is out of my "norm" it stands as one of my favorite "fluffy" series, and I always grab what she writes.

Raze was not at all what I was expecting. It is the 1st one I have read by her that is not "fluffy" and honestly, I went into it thinking I wouldnt like it as much because a good portion of the time, when an author veers off of her "normal" the books end up feeling forced. This was not the case with Raze .. not even close.

If you are looking for fluff, then walk away. Because there is not an ounce of fluff within a 10 mile radius of Raze. And it was FANTASTIC!

I read this one in one sitting, I could not get enough, and I was thankful I started in the wee morning hours (due to not being able to sleep) and did not have to work the next day. Because I devoured it.

This is one of those books that I find hard to review because I dont want to give even a spec of the story away because it will take away from the reader as they read the book.

What I will say is that I loved the characters, I loved the flow. I loved the story. I loved the twists and turns. And even tho I thought I had it figured out, I didnt. Some parts of it leave you with the feeling that you have it all worked out, but then you try and shove a piece of the puzzle in only to realize that it wont fit. It looks like it will, its close, but there is just enough of a difference in the piece you are holding and the spot you are trying to fit it that it doesnt line up and snap in.

There were parts to this story that broke my heart. I wanted to crawl into the pages and wrap my arms around Raze and tell him it was going to be ok. It was heart wrenching at times. And where Ms. Cole came up with some of the twisted things that happened is beyond my realm of understanding. This one was grotesque at times, I needed a fuffy, comedy to read after I turned the last page. It left me emotionally drained. But it left me wanting more. Even tho this is a dark read, the emotion that was packed within its pages will leave you reeling. It will send you on an emotional roller coaster that leaves you breathless once you climb off the ride.

If you like a good mind bender, a good dark read, a good twisted holy hell where did that come from story, then go now and one click this one. Just make sure you have a few hours to waste, because you are not going to want to put it down.

Review -- Emerged by Marissa Honeycutt

Emerged (The Life of Anna #5)Emerged by Marissa Honeycutt

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Didn't hate it. didn't love it.

I feel like the air was taken out of my sails. I don't know if my expectations were too high?? Based on all the reviews, and the warning from the author, I was expecting dark dark twisted dark. But what I feel like I got was -- meh... I have read way darker, crazier, more twisted than these books. And honestly, I feel like the "dark" title has been given to it based on the sex slave aspect of the series. I just personally do not consider the constant rape of a woman the reason to label a series as dark. If you haven't read the series, then that may not make sense. But it's hard to review and explain my feelings without giving anything away.

I read the 1st book. I was tempted to dnf it, but I got curious about the under ground society aspect of the book with the hint of paranormal twist. Unfortunately, I wanted more in depth info about the society. And I was met with page after page, after page, after page, after page, after page, after page (well you get the idea) of nothing but all the ways a human can rape another human. Blah.. moving on...

I began book 2. I dnf'd around 25% because I just couldn't read another 9 million pages of nothing but this poor woman getting raped. And I decided at that point the reason the series was labeled dark romance was purely on the continous raping and sex slave aspects.

I skipped 3 and 4 completely. And jumped to this one, book 5 because I was curious to see how it would end. Thinking worse case scenerio, I would have to back track and either read the other books, or just throw in the towel. I was met with another 9 million pages of the same old things from the 1st book, plus a small bit of the mystery surrounding the plot. And you know what??? I never felt lost. Even without reading books 2, 3 or 4 I was able to follow along and understand what was happening. This book was drawn out and I felt alot of it could of been left out and not been missed. I actually ended up doing alot of skimming thru. And I still didn't get lost or not be able to figure out what was going on. *Sigh*

so.. sounds like a horrible review??? I know... But Iam not one to sugar coat things. And if you follow my reviews, you already know this about me. So why did I end up giving this 3 stars instead of 1 or 2 or a dnf?? Because the story was origional. Because I liked the majority of the characters. (Anna, btw, is not one of my top favorite female leads.) Because it was well written. Because I liked the paranormal twist. And if the author had given more details about the underground society and the paranormal parts of the series I think I would of rated higher. But as it stands I feel like I was sold 5 books with 9 million pages each, of nothing but the play by play of a woman being raped and beaten. With the added "bonus" of her falling in insta love with every guy she meets and some beautiful dancing thrown in to lighten the load. Dark and twisted?? Umm.. no. Not in my opinion. I am a dark romance junky. And I would label this one darkish... and compared to the dark dark twisted books I've read, this one didn't even come close to measuring up. I feel so let down. Almost betrayed. After reading reviews and all of the author warnings, I was geared up for sleepless nights and haunted dreams... I got lack luster reading and the need to force myself to keep reading..... oh well... moving on.... Next!!!!!!

Review -- Enslaved by Marissa Honeycutt

Enslaved (The Life of Anna, #1)Enslaved by Marissa Honeycutt

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I didn't love this. but I also didn't hate this.

you know how you go into a book with huge amounts of enthusiasm and expectations bc the ratings are so good and the warnings that surround it leave you with the impression that it is so dark you won't be able to handle it?? I feel mislead. Even a bit lied to... because Iam wondering --- Did I read the same book as everyone else?? Because I didn't think it was that dark. Nor did I think it was a 5 star read.

Most of the book is nothing but Anna being treated like a blow up doll. Poor girl is raped more than anything else throughout the book. Literally, just about the entire book is her getting raped. Nothing really else to it.

*Sigh* I fell really misled. And honestly, the only reason Iam moving on to the next book is because the last bit of book 1 FINALLY caught my attention. And my need to know what the last chapter was all about is literally the only reason I'm going to read book 2. If it hadn't been for the last little bit of the book, I wouldn't bother with book 2. And depending on where book 2 leads will determine if I move to book 3 or even bother finishing book 2....because if book 2 is just more of book 1 I'm not wasting my non refundable time reading it. Hopefully book 2 is not the same repetitive jumbled nonense mess book 1 turned out to be.

I hate the feelings I've been left with from this book. Because it is not even as close to dark as all the warnings leads you to believe. And for a dark twisted romance whore like me, this book leaves me feeling just kind of blah....

Review - Carter Reed 2 by Tijan

Carter Reed 2 (Carter Reed, #2)Carter Reed 2 by Tijan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 stars rounded up to 4...

Not even as close to as good as the 1st one.....

*Sigh* I HATE when this happens. Carter Reed was at the top of my favorite reads the year I read it. I LOVED it. I loved Carter. I loved the story. I loved the flow, the twists, the unexpected little things. I just loved it. And when I found out there was a 2nd book I was on cloud 9. Floating high in dream land thinking how much I was looking forward to having more time with Carter Reed *Swoon*

And then there was Carter Reed 2... *pop* goes my balloon that has been carrying me around...

Carter Reed 2 was not terrible. It just wasnt great. Honestly I did not feel like it added to the story at all and the author wrote it because of pressure coming her way from fans wanting more. Somethings should be left alone... Carter Reed was one of them.

Review -- In the Beginning by London Miller

In the Beginning (Volkov Bratva, #1)In the Beginning by London Miller

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 rounded up to 4 (again wishing there was a 1/2 star option)

I've had this (and the rest of the series) on my iPad forever. since I've been on a mafia kick I finally broke them out.

The story line was good. I liked the little twist in the end. Again I'm faced with a cliffhanger, but at least I have the next books already.

I would of probably rated this one a solid 4 41/2 but OMG the editing issues. I'm normally one to pass over them or not notice. But this was so full of them it drove me to the edge and I felt the need to drink. Thank goodness I'm curious enough to see how it plays out or I don't think I would move on to the next book. And honestly depending on how bad it is with the grammatical errors, misspelled words, mi use of words, etc I may not survive the entire story... ok rant over

I loved the story behind this one. Lauren seems a bit too naive for me, but taking into consideration her past and her mother hovering over her, I was able to let it slide. plus in the end, her inner take charge girl showed up. So I'm hoping the meek little doormat that she was in this book doesn't carry over into the next one.

Mishca was delicious. I did love him. You knew from the start he had demons and layers to him, and from the word go you wanted to pick and peel until you found out what he was hiding.

As far as the mafia part of the story goes, it was well played. I felt a little of it was over explained and a waste of words, but at the same time I understood why the author chose to do it. Someone unfamiliar with terms spoken and the ways of the Bratva would be glad that it is all very well laid out.

I wanted to really love this one. I wanted to be able to give it a higher rating. But in the end it is one of those that I don't hate and yet I don't love. And it came down to the horrible God awful lack of editing. I know the cost involved. But that is what good Beta readers can be used for. And the errors were do obvious that anyone who set out to help the author would of (or should of) been able to catch the majority of them.

Can you tell I'm really fixated on the editing issues?? Sad isn't it? And for anyone that follows my reviews on a regular basis, ypu know this is not normally something I pick to pieces or even mention. Much less focus on.. that is how distracting they were.

Here goes nothing. .. wish me luck, because Iam diving into book 2 - Until the End.

Review -- Porter by David Michaels

Porter (Dick Dynasty Trilogy, #1)Porter by David Michael

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 stars rounded up to 5 (I really wish they would come up with a 1/2 system)

Gah!! When is the next one due out?? Anyone know??? Because I seriously need need need to know what happens.... cliffhangers... I have such a love/hate relationship with them.

I received this one from a friend of mine. She gifted it to me bc she wanted to make sure I read it and knew it was outside my norm. And I'm glad she did.. bc here Iam at 7:30 am on Sunday am wanting to know when the next one releases.

So let's break this one down... ready??

Porter. . LUSH! Just absolutely lush. He is a popular porn star riding on the waves of his current success, loving his lavish bachlor life. The son of one of the industries most popular porn stars, his deceased father has left big shoes to fill. He is breezing through life, when he gets knocked on his ass by Holly, and he never sees it coming. He is hilarious, and some of the one liners he tosses out made me wonder about the author and where his mind dwell Porter is your typical, overly inflated ego porn star. But underneath all the cocky bad boy, he has hidden this amazing guy that when the right woman comes along, he sets free. And that man, the inner man, makes you want to do whatever you have to in order to have him all to yourself.

Holly is a casting agent. The best in the business. One who is a bit judgemental, harsh tongued and closed down. She hates porn and has no respect for the industry. She also has no time or desire to be in a relationship, and the idea of sleeping with a porn star leaves her running hot and cold. Her body wants him, but her mind warns her not to go there. She is practical not passionate. But Porter brings her base instincts to the surface. And feelings of desire she has long surpressed come rushing through her. She puts up a good fight, but she eventually throws caution to the wind, and finds herself caught up in all that is Porter.

These two are dynamite together. Absolutely explosive. Their chemistry is over the top and I loved the fact that the author didn't base the entire book around just their relationship. I wasn't sure how to feel as I started reading this one, but the more I read, the more I fell into the story and devoured it.

If I listed all the different angles and sub plots it would sound like the author had thrown everything but the kitchen sink into this book. And in a way I guess he did. But it worked. And it worked beautifully. Nothing felt forced or just hap hazardly thrown in. Their was purpose for everything. You just didn't realize it until everything came to a head and exploded. But the explosion was perfectly timed and when the dust had settled, the book ended... On a cliffhanger. I wanted to scream. But it was a worthy cliffhanger. And I need the next book.. Stat.

Iam doing the hope dance that the author writes at least 2 novellas to go with the series. It appears the series will be 3 books... Porter has 2 brother, Parker and Preston. Both of which are also in the porn industry. The Cliffhanger sets up for one of the brothers to be the next book. And I assume the last brothers book will follow. But I'm hoping for Becks and Mitch to get their own stories as well. Becks is Holly's best friend. And she is a total trip. And Mitch is Holly's assistant. He needs his own hea as well. And even though their stories were woven into Porter and Hollys, and could have their hea play out with in the pages of the brothers books, I'm hoping they get their 5 minutes of fame and get at least a novella within the series. They are the kind of side characters that almost make the book. The kind that without their presence would mean the book lacked something. I loved them. And trust me, no way could they hook up and become an item.

I highly recommend this one. Porter is a bit on the fluff side. So if you're like me and tend to gravitate to gritty and intense reads, Porter makes an excellent in between read. It is a perfect read to help soothe your latest book hangover, or help calm you down if you just finished an overly intense tear jerker. But no matter the reason, Porter will not disappoint. Just be ready to laugh. So, jump in and enjoy the ride.
